In the U.S., the Tundra and Tacoma are well-known nameplates, but everywhere else Hilux is the name associated with Toyota’s truck lineup. Recently, Toyota introduced an all-new diesel engine for the Hilux, a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV I-4 turbodiesel that boasts incredible thermal efficiency, among other benefits. Many sources believe the new engine could be seen on future Tacoma models.

The next-generation diesel engine will offer 177 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque, or with a small-displacement version 148 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Thermal efficiency is said to be an impressive 44 percent! This is largely the result of a significant decrease in cooling loss, which is down roughly 30 percent thanks to the use of pistons that are composed of silica-reinforced porous anodized aluminum. In addition, more torque is available over a larger rpm range and throttle response is enhanced with the integration of a new 30-percent smaller turbocharger. Toyota also says the engine offers greater fuel economy and reduced noise.

We hope the rumors are true about the 1GD turbodiesel engine coming to U.S. versions of the Tacoma and will let you know if more details arise. Subscribe to Crown Toyota’s RSS feed if you don’t want to miss updates!
