What's New for the 2019 Toyota Highlander?

Nearing the end of its third production cycle, the Toyota Highlander gets a few exterior touchups on its two uppermost trims. Otherwise, the midsize crossover SUV virtually remains the same model as that of the previous model year.

2019 Toyota Highlander Interior

2019 Highlander is Packed with Interior Features

The 2019 Toyota Highlander is split into five trims: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited. Although there are three rows of seats in the cabin, the LE and LE Plus seat up to eight people due to their second-row bench-style seats, and the SE goes with a pair of captain's seats in the same row reducing maximum capacity to seven. On the XLE and Limited, you can choose between a seven-seater and an eight-seater. As the base-level trim, the LE provides fabric-trimmed seats with 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat and a 4-way manually adjustable front passenger seat. The LE Plus blends the fabric with synthetic leather trim, and it gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with thigh and lumbar support.

The XLE is upgraded with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. Unique to the Limited are perforated leather seat trim, front-seat ventilation ability (in addition to heating), and heated second-row seats. Standard interior amenities on the SUV include dual-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless technology, Siri Eyes Free, a 4.2-inch color LCD multi-information display, three front-row and two second-row USB ports (five in total), Entune multimedia integration, six-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, a single-disc CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack for hooking up portable media devices, voice recognition technology, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen display.

Enhancing the LE Plus are HD Radio technology, an 8-inch touchscreen (in place of the 6.1-inch), the Scout GPS Link app for navigation, and a three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription. At the XLE trim level, the Highlander is further enhanced with tri-zone automatic climate control (instead of dual-zone), a smart key system with push-button engine start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a navigation system instead of Scout GPS Link. Unique to the Limited is a 12-speaker JBL GreenEdge audio system instead of the six-speaker setup.

The Power & Performance of the 2019 Toyota Highlander is Highly Capable

2019 Toyota Highlander FrontThe LE trim of the 2019 Highlander uses a 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine is hitched to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The other four trims go with a 3.5-liter V6, which provides 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, is hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission and includes stop-and-start technology to eliminate engine idling. The extra number of gears and the stop-and-start system help the non-LE trims achieve the vehicle's estimated fuel economy of 21/27 mpg provided that you stick with the standard front-wheel drivetrain instead of opting for the all-wheel-drive system.

Which Safety Technologies has Toyota Included for 2019?

2019 Toyota Highlander RearMost of the standard safety features on the 2019 Toyota Highlander are classified into two suites: Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and lane departure alert with steering assist; and the Star Safety System, which consists of vehicle stability control, traction control, smart stop technology, and an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

Also standard are seven airbags, a backup camera, hill start assist control, a one-year trial subscription to Safety Connect (for functions such as emergency assistance, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle locator, and automatic collision notification), a ToyotaCare no-cost maintenance plan, and engine immobilization to combine with remote keyless entry for a theft-deterrent system. At the LE Plus level, Toyota adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The XLE and Limited get a panic alarm to fully flesh out their anti-theft systems. And the Limited is unique with its rear parking assist sonar system.
