Mouths dropped and audible oohs and aahs resounded when the new redesigned 2016 Toyota Tacoma debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. With looks and power that’ll spark your wanderlust, as well as a bevy of tech and storage features, Tacoma once again marks its territory in the midsize pickup segment, proving that it’s still one of your No. 1 truck picks.
Added high-strength steel makes the frame and body shell that much more durable and rigid, without adding extra pounds to the truck. In fact, a new stamping process is used for the shell, helping reduce the pickup’s weight according to Toyota.
Underbody, a fine-tuned suspension offers greater performance on and off pavement, meaning you’ll enjoy a smooth, more sophisticated ride in the city and more capable performance when playing in the dirt.
Under the hood there are great updates, too. Along with an efficient 2.7-liter four-cylinder, there’s a brand-new Atkinson V-6 with Toyota’s exclusive D-4S technology, which includes port and direct fuel injection. Experts say the new V-6 may lead the midsize truck class in fuel economy, but mpg ratings haven’t been released quite yet.
The V-6 is supported by two new quick-shifting transmissions - your choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. With the new transmissions and Atkinson V-6, the 2016 Tacoma is the most powerful and fuel-efficient Tacoma in history.
Outside, the truck’s appearance is bold and athletic. With a prominent new hex-shaped front grille, standout skid-plate design, taller hood, new tailgate and other highlights, Tacoma’s styling signifies that it’s ready for action and built for all sorts of recreational activities.
