Toyota understands that solar energy will be vital to our shared future. As a cleaner substitute for the fossil fuels that supplied energy over the past century, solar power is crucial for safeguarding the environment. To celebrate this creative and sustainable energy source, Toyota has introduced the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, which can now be viewed by visitors at its Research & Development hub in Michigan.

Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy

Created through a joint effort between Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this breathtaking exhibition beautifully integrates solar technology with vivid color palettes. Far from merely looking attractive, the installation actively captures power. Developing a variety of renewable energy options is vital to sustaining our contemporary lifestyle as fossil fuel supplies diminish.

Constructed at a 1/6th scale, this carbon-neutral, self-sufficient model features 11 triangular pillars. By employing lenticular lenses, the engineers managed to obscure the solar panels while maintaining their energy-gathering capabilities. In short, the sculpture functions as both an elegant work of art and a practical ecological breakthrough that actively produces electricity.

The roots of this extraordinary concept go back several years. Although the formal request for the venture was made in 2020, its underlying technology was created more than a decade ago. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, noted that TMC started testing nanotechnology-driven dynamic color pigments 12 years earlier, intending to eventually utilize them for solar uses.

Though financed by TMC, APPO led the campaign for the North American market, overseeing budgeting and pushing for its retail application. Today, this Vivid colored-panel technology can be incorporated into standard solar setups while retaining more than 90% of the panels' initial energy efficiency.

Co-project leader Brian Woods is just as excited to see the Vivid Solar technology come to fruition. "When you look at both exhibition and marketing opportunities, there is excellent ROI potential for this technology," he states, adding that this progressive tech successfully pairs an eco-friendly power source with endless branding opportunities.
