Toyota Safety Sense exists because Toyota made safety a top priority long before developing one of the world’s most recognized driver-assist systems. The company has a dedicated division focused solely on advancing safety innovations. In 2011, Toyota launched its Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC), placing a major emphasis on mobility safety. Since then, the CSRC has teamed up with universities, hospitals, and experts to study crash injury reduction, driver behavior, and accident prevention. The results have been impressive.

Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project

Toyota’s CSRC places a strong focus on collision mitigation research. Since collisions claim lives, every effort to enhance occupant protection helps push vehicle safety forward. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that a joint effort with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab marked the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.

Reflecting on this milestone, CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov shared, “This is a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The collaboration with MIT explored how drivers and pedestrians interact with technologies like mobile devices and in-vehicle touchscreens.

The 100th project, supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, involved extensive cooperation between Toyota and MIT. It delivered valuable insights, including a dataset on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian dynamics. Researchers also examined how driver-assist systems influence behavior and observed tasks not related to driving.

Never satisfied resting on its successes, Toyota’s research center is already planning its next 10 projects. Upcoming collaborations will involve the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is taking a moment to celebrate this important accomplishment while considering how to apply the latest findings to make driving even safer for customers.
