Benefits of Replacing My Engine Air Filter

Replacing your vehicle's engine air filter can result in many benefits. This filter is what provides a constant flow of clean air to the engine, allowing your vehicle to efficiently burn fuel. When this filter is worn out or clogged, it can no longer send a constant flow of clean oxygen to the engine, resulting in multiple vehicle issues.

When the engine air filter is not replaced often enough, the vehicle's engine will not run as efficiently. Some problems that arise with an old filter include poorer gas mileage than usual, trouble accelerating and a rough engine when the car is idling.

How Often Should I Replace My Engine Air Filter?

As a general rule, you need to have your engine air filter replaced before problems arise. You can check your vehicle's maintenance schedule or the manual for specific advice, or you can go by the rule of replacing the filter every 12,000 to 30,000 miles. Some manufacturers will recommend replacing the filter once a year, but this depends on how much you drive your vehicle.

If the engine air filter is due for a change, you may also notice some signs that the part should be replaced. Your check engine light may come on. However, this is not true with every vehicle. An old filter can also cause fouled spark plugs, a gas smell when starting the engine, misfiring or backfiring of the engine, black or smoky exhaust, strange or loud engine noise, reduction in engine power, and stumbling accelerator and fouled spark plugs.

You can also physically check the filter to see if it looks old, coated or dirty. The fabric or foam of a new filter is usually white, although, in some cases, the material may be another color. A good, functioning filter will not be dark or blackened with debris, but a filter that needs to be replaced will appear dirty, coated with dust or discolored.
