Toyota has a tradition of paying it forward to those who have sacrificed the most to serve our country. Along with its hire a hero initiative, the company also provides cars to veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project. For the past three years, Toyota and the NY Auto Show have presented a new ride to deserving ex-military personnel and this year Alfredo De Los Santos earned the honor.
Alfredo, also known as Freddie, was a graphic designer for seven years before 911 happened. When the tragedy struck, he made a decision to join the military and served until he was struck by an RPG in 2008. Following his injury, Freddie said he was going through the worst time of his life, but his wife encouraged him to get into hand cycling, which is now his beloved full-time profession. He hand cycles 40 to 60 miles a day and participates in competitions.
When presented with a new Toyota RAV4 at this year’s NY Auto Show, Freddie repeatedly stated how thankful he was to Toyota, the auto show and Wounded Warrior Project. But truly it’s the American public who are thankful for what he’s done for this country. Freddie lost his right leg above the knee during his service, and while there’s nothing that can bring it back, Toyota and the NY Auto Show rewarded his heroism with a gift that will make his life a little easier.
The RAV4 was modified so that Freddie can drive it fully with his left leg and, of course, there’s plenty of room for his family.
