Toyota’s newest Camatte concept car will make you dream of being a kid again. The automaker recently unveiled its sixth child-sized concept, called the Hajime, at the Tokyo Toy Show and it’s kind of awesome. Like other Camatte models, it comes with removable body panels, which make it easy to update the car with “new skin.” There’s also a seat large enough to take an adult along for a joy ride.
Toyota’s goal with Camatte (which means “play” in Japanese) is to start teaching kids driving skills and instill a love of driving at a young age. Unfortunately, the Camatte lineup isn’t available on the market, but we hope Toyota will consider selling them at dealerships or toy stores eventually. They’d certainly give Power Wheels a run for their money.
At the Tokyo Toy Show, visitors got to see how the Camatte Hajime’s customizable exterior worked via a virtual shop, where they could choose from 13 different body styles, including fire truck, police car, ambulance and even hot dog truck. Along with a customizable exterior, there are parental controls in back so moms and dads can set the maximum speed limit. The front seats and pedals are also adjustable to fit children of varying ages. While Camatte minicars are not designed to be driven on actual roads, we think they would still achieve Toyota’s goal of educating children about transportation using a fun, interactive method.
Check out some Camatte photos below to see different models. The first image shows two of the different body types that could be used on the Hajime and the bottom photos are previous Camatte concepts from 2012.
