Toyota’s hydrogen-fuel cell Mirai is taking the automaker’s green efforts to new heights. Mirai was recently crowned as the 2016 World Green Car at the New York International Auto Show.

This recognition puts Toyota in the spotlight, yet again, for being a leader in the zero emissions automotive push around the world. “Just as Prius changed the world nearly 20 years ago, the hydrogen-powered Mirai is ready to make history,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “With a range of over 300 miles per tank, a refueling time of under five minutes, and emissions that consist only of water vapor, Mirai is leading the world forward toward a more sustainable future.”

The Mirai is able to achieve the 300-mile range by two power sources: The 11 pounds of pressurized hydrogen that the vehicle carries, as well as the 1.6-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery that can be found behind the rear seats. This dynamic combination of power drives the Mirai’s electric motor that generates 151 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque. With a top speed of 111 miles per hour, the car produces plenty of power, and also doesn’t come with the limitations of a charging cord.

Currently, Mirai is only available for purchase in certain parts of California; however, Toyota plans to change that in the near future by adding more refueling stations to New York and Massachusetts.
